BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - T
he FEMA Disaster Recovery Center serves as a one stop shop for tornado victims.
Residents can check the status of their application for federal assistance and talk with mitigation experts to get an idea of how to prevent damage in future storms.
The Small Business Administration is available to talk to folks about loans to help them fully recover from the disaster."There are Disaster Recovery Centers located on various locations in Jefferson County as well as Chilton County. You don't have to come just to the one here in Pinson, if another DRC is closer to you, you can go to that Disaster Recovery Center," says Tim Tyson, FEMA Public Affairs Officer.
FEMA says because each case is unique, it's important to find out what your insurance *won't* cover and how FEMA can backstop that.
Victims should know about any loopholes in their policy that could hurt them while they're trying to get help.
By noon Friday, 15 residents had already stopped in, which Tyson said is a great start to their assistance program here.
They'll be out here until everyone eligible for assistance has received it.
