MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) - I
n front of the Alabama Pardons and Parole Board, Jason Lee tearfully explained why the man who sexually molested him and countless others, needs to stay behind bars."I can't change the past but I can help bring awareness to this man and the special kind of evil that he could potentially be let free on the streets of Alabama," says Lee.
Former boy scout and church leader Charles Donald Corley was up for parole Tuesday, after serving 16 of his 30 year sentence.
Victims explained that denying parole isnt about punishment, but about protection.
"This amount of time is a small penance compared to the lifetime sentence that I unwillingly received as a victim," adds Victim #2.
Corley's mother and close friend told the board that he is a good man, has served his time, and deserves to be free.
"When is enough enough? What would be gained if he served an additional 5, 10 or 15 years? At what point do you seek closure for everyone?"
Ultimately however, the board favored the victims' request.
"Parole is denied. It will be set for reconsideration in 5 years."
Although relieved by the decision, Lee says his personal ordeal with Corley is far from over.
"Getting the cycle started up again in 5 years, which we'll absolutely do, I need to get in touch with those feelings again, I have to write new words, I have to tell my story again. No it's not easy at all. I would ultimately prefer to forget about it, but I don't have that luxury," Lee adds.
Corley will be up for parole again in 5 years.
While he was originally convicted for three victims, Lee says there are countless others.
