Montgomery, Ala. (WIAT) - Alabama could be the next state to get charter schools.  There is new legislation circulating through the statehouse that would allow the public school alternative.

Charter schools allow more flexibility in the classroom so that teachers can try to meet more individual needs of their students.  But the system does have detractors.

Local representatives for the Alabama Education Association say charter schools take students and tax money away from the public school system.
