You may or may not know that Alabama has a state song. Not many Alabamians are familiar with it and one politician says that's a problem.

"Alabama" is a poem written by Julia Tutwiler was put to music and made the state song in 1931.

"The poem is beautiful. It covers everything from the orange trees in Alabama, which I've yet to see, but it covers all of it."

Former State Legislator Jack Biddle III attempted to change the state song several times to a more familiar tune.

"Stars Fell On Alabama" is a great song, I don't care where you go anyone can play it. It's a love song you know, one you can dance to or hug your sweetheart to."

While it passed in the Senate, Biddle was never able to pass it in the House.

"Oh, you don't go changing the state song for anything."

Now, the legislation is back on the table to change the state song.

But, do Alabamaians know the words to either song? We took to the streets to find out.

While many folks we spoke with don't mind one way or another, Biddle says he would be thrilled if Stars Fell On Alabama became the new state song.

"Oh, I'd feel good. Maybe they'll name the bill for me, you never know."

The former Senator hastens to add that lawmakers in Montgomery are working hard on more pressing issues, such as gambling and education.
