The driver of a Birmingham school bus that flipped on Interstate 20 injuring 17 people was distracted by a small animal.

The bus was taking Wenonah H.S. students to a basketball tournament. The 17 injuries included bumps, cuts and bruises but no broken bones.

A report released by Alabama State Troopers says the driver, 37-year-old James Boles,  saw a small animal run in front of the bus moments before the bus ran off the road.

Boles told troopers he didn't swerve for the animal but did look back to see what kind of animal it was.
