BIRMINGHAM, AL (WIAT)- Police tell CBS 42 that a body found in a lake near Highland Park Golf Course at 12:45pm on Monday could be that of Major Bashinsky, a Mountain Brook man who went missing on March 3.

Those who work, live, and even represent the area couldn't believe a body was discovered on the golf course.

"That's very shocking because this is a very quiet neighborhood. It's a very peaceful neighborhood, and it's a very good neighborhood," says State Senator Rodger Smitherman who represents that area.

Birmingham police say some golfers saw the body early this afternoon.

But according to one neighbor, they weren't the first.

"We took a walk out here yesterday and at four o'clock, and whatever was floating out there now was floating out there yesterday," says Mitch Damsky who lives nearby.

The coroner's investigation included a call to Mountain Brook Police.  Chief Johnny Stanley says according to the coroner, there's a strong possibility the body is that of Major Bashinsky, a 63 year old attorney who's been missing since March 3.

"I figure there must have been something pretty positive there for them to say there was a strong possibility," says Chief Stanley.

The coroner called Mountain Brook PD trying to obtain dental records of Bashinsky's to compare to the body.

"They're not going to tell us it's him until they are 100 percent certain."

Bashinsky's car was found in Southside less than two miles from Highland Park Golf Course.  Bashinsky is an heir to the Golden Flake company. In his car, a letter taped to a bag of Golden Flake potato chips was found. The letter says it's from workers and friends of Golden Flake who are forced to "act with urgency" regarding "greedy and harmful dividends paid to the Bashinsky's."

Chief Stanley speculates the body will be identified within the next day or two.
