Montgomery, AL (WIAT) - Day three of jury selection continues in the Federal corruption trial against Victoryland's Milton McGregor, several former and current state legislators and lobbyist. Many attorneys had hoped they would be farther along in the jury selection process, and starting opening statements today, but the questioning jurors process has taken longer than expected. This morning the attorneys began questioning the 3rd panel of the jury pool containing around 30 people, mostly from the Montgomery area. Not wanting to fall behind this early in the trial we have been told Judge Myron Thompson has informed the attorneys they will not leave today before they have struck a jury. Over the past couple of days it has taken the more than 30 attorneys a full day to question one panel of jury. Today the attorneys must do that plus come to an agreement on 12 jurors and 4 alternates. Milton McGregor’s attorney Joe Espy believes today’s proceedings could go until after 8 this evening if the judge holds true to his demand that a Jury is struck today.
If a jury is struck opening statements could begin Thursday. The judge has allotted six hours and twenty minutes for attorney's opening statements, there are also several motions the judge must rule on before any evidence can begin to be presented. The meat of this trial will begin to unfold early next week, but it is still expected to take well over a month before the jury is charged with making a ruling on the corruption and vote buying charges against the defendants.
