In about two weeks, Alabama school children will be headed back to class. So many families are taking that one last getaway before summer ends. And many on the Gulf Coast are hoping some of those taking a short vacation will head to the beach.
In the three months since the oil spill started the businesses on the Gulf Coast have taken a beating. Marie Curren, Director of Sales and Marketing for Brett-Robinson Realty in Gulf Shores, says her company lost about 60% of their projected sales. That means about a $10,000,000 loss in revenue.
But since the cap was put in place, she says things have been looking up. Instead of looking at about a 30% occupancy rate, the last couple have weekends have been about 50%. The weekend of the Jimmy Buffett beach concert the rentals she manages were over 60% full.
