CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) - The last remaining animal shelter gas chambers in the state have shut down for good ... with animal rights groups condemning them as inhumane.
The Cullman County Animal Shelter was only one of four in the state still using the carbon monoxide euthanasia method.
A new law just went into effect requiring them to dismantle their gas chamber and only use injections.
Animal rights activists praise the decision, citing that it took up to twenty minutes for animals to die using the gas versus seconds with an injection.
Meanwhile, workers say there is a tremendous need for homes ... They had to euthenize more than 25-hundred animals last year. They say the only way to bring down these numbers is for pet owners to get their animals spayed and neutered.
There are dozens of animals that need to be adopted at the Cullman County shelter, including the three dogs featured in the story. For more information on adopting from the Cullman County Animal Shelter call 256-338-0328. The shelter is located just off of Convent Road in Cullman. They showcase animals on www.petfinder.com
