WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIAT) - It's another stat that Alabamians can't be proud of.
A new report released by the Violence Policy Center shows Alabama has the nation's second highest rate of women killed by men. It's part of "
When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2009 Homicide Data." The report details information from across the country on female homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender. The most recent FBI data is used in the report.
Nevada has the highest rate in the nation at 2.70 per 100,000 people. Alabama's rate is 2.64. No other state tops 2.00 per 100,000.
The ten states will the highest rates of women murdered by men are:
1. Nevada - rate of 2.70 per 100,000
2. Alabama - rate of 2.64 per 100,000
3. Louisiana - rate of 1.99 per 100,000
4. Arizona - rate of 1.92 per 100,000
5. Tennessee - rate of 1.83 per 100,000
6. Georgia - rate of 1.80 per 100,000
7. South Carolina - rate of 1.79 per 100,000
8t. South Dakota - rate of 1.72 per 100,000
8t. Hawaii - rate of 1.72 per 100,000
10. Missouri - rate of 1.70 per 100,000
The national rate of women killed by men is 1.25 per 100,000.
In 2009, 1,818 females were murdered by males in a single victim/single offender incident.
According to the report, the most commonly used weapon used are firearms.
Most of the cases involved people who knew one another. In fact, 93% of the victims knew the person who killed them. That includes 63% who were wives or intimate acquaintances of their killers.
