BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Monday marks the 6 year anniversary of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway and this past year we have seen one shocking twist after another in the  case.

The crime, the timing, all just so shocking on the anniversary of her daughters disappearance.  Beth Holloway gets the news that prime suspect Joran van der Sloot is charged with the vicious murder of Stephanie Flores in Peru.

The story once again dominates local and international headlines.  It's then that Holloway decides to confront van der Sloot inside the Peruvian prison where he's being held.

Beth Holloway doesn't get the answer she's been searching for, for six years.  Where is Natalee's body?

In yet another development after the Flores murder, federal prosecutors in Alabama reveal they have charged van der Sloot with trying to extort money from the Holloway family.

He allegedly took $250,000, but never told them what happened to Natalee.  First, the murder case will have to be resolved.

This month,  van der Sloots attorney said if the trial doesn't start with in six months, he will ask for his client to be released until it starts.

He has also indicated van der Sloot would plead guilty to a manslaughter charge, but fight murder charges which carry a maximum of 35 years.

As the Holloway family waits to learn how the case will play out in court, Beth Holloway has turned her focus to helping other families with missing relatives.

US Attorney Joyce Vance says quote "as soon as I can get my hands on Joran van der Sloot, I intend to try him and put in in jail for as long as possible."
