In May, CBS 42's Nicole Wyatt reported on how young people are opting not to use land line phone service.

One young man sums that thought process up with, "I have a cell phone, um I don't really have a use for a house phone."

However, not everyone is comfortable with letting the home phone go.

"I'm used to having it. You know I grew up with it."

Still, the lure of cutting out a pricey bill is tempting.

T-Mobile 280 Manager Terry Dawson says, "In today's economic conditions everyone wants to save money right. And you can save a lot of money over a traditional land line."

Dawson says that's because with today's technology if you want to cut the phone company out of your budget, that doesn't mean giving up your home telephone service.

"You do not need a traditional line anymore. Our At home service is voice over I-P. It works right through your broadband internet service for just $9.99 per month."

The difference, instead of plugging your home phone into the wall, you will plug into a router that works through your homes high speed internet service.

But unless you're an existing T-mobile customer or willing to change cell phone providers you won't be able to take advantage of nationwide anytime calling at that $9.99 price.

But there are other services that offer similar discounts.

For instance, Vonage works just like the T-Mobile plan, only it cost a little more. For $25 you can call just about anywhere in the world for no extra charge.

Then there's a device called Magic Jack. Magic Jack is a USB adapter that connects between your phone and your computer and allows you to call anywhere in the world for just 20 dollars a year.

All three products will let you keep your existing home phone number plus offer features like call waiting, caller ID, and local 9-1-1 service at no extra charge.

But there is a downside, if your internet connection goes down, so does your home phone.

But if that happens, you always have a call phone as an emergency backup.

The "extras" aren't any help, when all you need the phone for are local and local long distance calls. Sure I can call out, but I can't give the number to anyone to contact me -- therefore, the phone doesn't get used at all. Even if I used my one free number change to change to a number in the area -- it would still be long distance for even my neighbor. I paid for 5 years of service, and I think it's going to be that long before the phone company for Gadsden will let them purchase any local numbers

We live in Gadsden, and I still cannot use our MagicJack phone as a regular phone, since there are no local telephone numbers available for the Gadsden area of the 256 area code; anyone calling would incur local long distance charges, unless they happen to have area calling. Could you all check on that problem with the available phone numbers, and light a fire under them?
