Birmingham, AL (WIAT) -- Heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women in the United States and many people don't know what to look for and how to protect themselves.  The month of February is American Heart Month and a lot of information is out there to make yourself a little more knowledgeable about this disease.  February 3, 2012 is Wear Red Day for women and join CBS 42 and the American Heart Association and wear red with the Red Dress Pin to support fighting this disease.  There is much more going on this month and Matt Hooper with the American Heart Association sits down with Wake Up Alabama's Kalee Dionne to talk about what Birmingham is doing and how you can get involved. I agree with the regularly cited risk factors of smoking, excessive weight, diabetes, high blood pressure and lack of exercise that all contribute to the risks of heart attacks and strokes. However, in the discussion regarding this topic I find that natural hormone replacement for aging women and men is sorely missing. Women enter menopause earlier than men do andropause, but both sexes would benefit from replacing missing hormones, which in turn stimulate nitric oxide production from the lining of the arteries, which in turn is protecting us from heart diseases and strokes. Here is a summary from my web site regarding these thoughts: http://www.nethealthbook.com/articles/cardiovasculardisease_arteriosclerosis.php Ray Schilling, MD Kelowna, BC Canada
