CBS 42 has been celebrating Black History Month throughout February and we've taken a historical look back in our Faith in Action reports.

Recently Sherri Jackson sat down with UAB composer and Audiostate 55 studios owner Dr. Henry Panion for a lesson on the negro spiritual.

Recently Birmingham City Schools held their annual 'Songs of Our Heritage Concert at First Baptist Church Ensley to showcase a new generation learning the meaning and power behind these dynamic songs.

They were the songs that set a people free.

Although they were enslaved, these spiritual songs of hope and a better place gave the African in America freedom of the most important kind: freedom of the soul.
