FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT)- A group of bright young minds are preparing for a monumental challenge at one of the centers of academic achievement.  The Fairfield math team is heading to Harvard!

"Harvard!  I'm excited, my mom's excited, my family's excited.  This is my first time competing in a math tournament," says Nigel Kemp, one of the freshmen on the team.

It's a school-wide effort.  Seniors are helping the young minds prepare for the tough challenge that lies ahead of them.  "I get to see what kind of skills they have and I get to put my skills with theirs.  It feels real good to know they're making improvements within themselves and making the school look better," says senior Samantha Bedford, one of the team's "Coaches."

Unfortunately, the team still needs about $21,000 to make it to the tournament, which is on February 11th.  "[It's] really sad because we were so excited to go to Harvard, but if you don't have enough money it just tears you down.  You just have to have faith in God to go," says Darryl Davis, a sophomore.  The community is rushing to the team's aid, pouring in donations to help them make their trip.  "All our kids need an opportunity.  They need an opportunity to shine, and this will be a good opportunity for our kids.  A different environment, seeing the campus, getting them motivated to go to college and thrive," says Vonda Dudley, an Algebra I teacher and the sponsor of the math team.

If you'd like to help the team out, you can send donations to Fairfield High School at:
        610 Valley Rd.
        Fairfield, AL 35064

Make donations out to "Fairfield High Math Club."
