BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Home schooling isn't what it used to be.  The information age allows students in grades K-12 to get public education in their homes often tuition-free.

Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school.  It's one of many emerging options for parents who want kids schooled at home, but not necessarily home schooling.  Like a traditional public school, it's free.  Virtual learning has been an option for college students for some time, but younger students thrive with more interaction.

Kids get time online with certified instructors.  Regular field trips to meet teachers and other students are also part of the experience, reinforcing relationships built over virtual connections.
