CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) - Imagine a prosthetic leg built out of car parts!  That's exactly what some Shelby County High School students created and the invention is turning heads in the world of medical engineering.

Students at Calera High School came up with the idea using motor mounts from a Toyota Corolla and have created fully functional artificial legs.  The idea is to help people in underdeveloped countries where folks simply can't afford the more expensive, yet less durable traditional prosthetics.

A traditional artificial leg costs thousands of dollar.  The student's creation is a more durable invention that only costs $150.

The students hope to raise money to build many more and personally deliver them to Third World Countries.
