Birmingham, Ala (WIAT) It's hard to imagine an issue more important to our community than education. The quality of the schools our children attend and the quality of the education they receive are critical to the future of Birmingham and our entire metro region.
That's why CBS42 is teaming up with The Birmingham News' latest installment of Reinventing Our Community, the newspaper's ongoing project to examine where we are, where we want to be and how to get there.
News Managing Editor Chuck Clark says there's no more important issue facing us. "An issue that's really fundamental and at the core of every opportunity that Birmingham has, and that's disparity in our schools and because it's such a core issue, we wanted to have our second roundtable on that."
Monday, October 10 there will be a panel discussion of this critical issue involving
Dr. Phil Hammonds, Jefferson County Schools Superintendent; Dr. Craig Witherspoon, Birmingham City Schools Superintendent; Trish Crain, founder of the Hoover Schools Community Information Network; Sandra Roden, principal of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School (2011 Blue Ribbon School); and Jerry Tate, Birmingham City Schools parent.
Birmingham News Editor Tom Scarritt will lead the discussion and solicit questions from an invited group of community leaders.
CBS42 will broadcast this important forum live on our second digital channel, CBS42.2 as well as streaming it live on CBS42.com. We will also be providing that live stream to Al.com. If you want to participate, you can ask questions via Al.com's chat feature.
CBS42 will also rebroadcast the event on Saturday, Oct 15 at 12:30 p.m. We will simulcast the first half hour on both CBS42 and CBS42.2 continuing the expected two hour program in its entirety on 42.2.
CBS42 President and General Manager Bill Ballard says "the station is pleased the paper asked us to work with them in this important project. We hope this leads to an ongoing collaboration on issues vital to the community."
