Hoover, AL (WIAT) - Some of the area’s most special middle and high school students have trained hard for Wednesday's meet.
150 students took turns swimming laps at the Hoover Rec Center as part of Jefferson County's fifth annual Special Olympics swim meet.
The students practiced for the meet over the last six weeks through swimming lessons provided by the Hueytown Boys and Girls Club.
P.E. teacher Wanda Westbrook says she's proud of the kids. "We are so proud of our program because we feel like we're working on something besides competition... We're working on life skills to make sure our kids know how to handle the water... But then to have a competition like this is just icing on the cake."
While this meet was more about physical education than actual competition Everyone left with some kind of prize.
