BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – They say seeing is believing. But, in Homewood, a Holocaust survivor is hoping future generations won't need that reassurance. Max Herzel was a 10-year old boy in Belgium when his mom, dad and older brother were ripped from his life. He told a packed crowd at the Homewood Library that despite his mother attempting suicide and his father ending up in a concentration camp he managed to survive. He told stories of families being taken in the middle of the night, good Samaritans being killed, and having no record of ever seeing his many cousins and aunts who simply disappeared.
History tells us that five million Christians and 6 million Jews were killed during World War II, which included a million and a half young people. His message is for the young people of this generation.
Max Herzel says, “You are the last generation, hear me well. You are the last generation that you will be able to shake a had, listen to a survivor explain to you what has happened.
Herzel volunteers his time to tell his story all across Alabama.
