Ken Lass
Anchor
A familiar face on Birmingham television for nearly 3 decades, Ken is a self proclaimed “Cheesehead” , having grown up in Southeastern Wisconsin.
He began his broadcasting career with 5 years in radio doing everything from disc jockey work, to covering city council meetings, to local high school play-by-play. In 1978 Ken crossed over into TV as Sports Director/Anchor in Tallahassee, Florida.
That was the beginning of a 22 year run as an award winning Sportscaster, 18 of those years for stations in Birmingham.
Along the way came numerous honors for Best Sports Anchor, Best Sports Story, and several regional Emmy Awards for specials and anchor work. He has done play-by-play for the Green Bay Packers, UAB basketball, Birmingham’s Canadian Football League team, Samford football, Birmingham Barons baseball and Alabama state high school football and basketball championship events. He has covered Super Bowls, World Series’, and was in the locker room when Alabama won the national football championship following the 1992 season.
The course of Ken’s career changed in the summer of 1996. He spent 3 weeks in Atlanta covering the Summer Olympics, an event which became dominated by the bombing of the Olympic venue. Ken’s insightful reporting from Olympic village sparked his interest in making the transition to news anchoring and reporting. In 2000 he took over as morning and midday news co-anchor at NBC 13 in Birmingham.
In 2006, Ken was presented with the opportunity to work in contemporary Christian radio, a long-time interest of his. He co-anchored the morning drive show on WDJC-FM in Birmingham.
In 2008 it was time to conquer the corporate world. Ken was chosen to be Corporate Director of Communication for Progress Rail Services, a world wide company of over 5,000 employees. But the chance to join the CBS 42 team in August of 2009 was “just too good to pass up.”
Ken lives in Trussville with his wife of 33 years, Sharon. He has two grown children, Brett and Brittany. His hobbies are triathlon, crossword puzzles, following his beloved Green Bay Packers, and listening to music way too loud in the car.
