Drug company asks Ala. judge to throw out $215M verdict
2008-06-10 12:46:17.0

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Attorneys for drug manufacturer
AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP have asked a judge to throw out a
$215 million jury verdict in a drug price fraud lawsuit or to
reduce the amount.
Montgomery County Circuit Judge Charles Price said at a hearing
Monday that he would rule on the AstraZeneca request within 10
days.
AstraZeneca is one of more than 70 pharmaceutical manufacturers
that Alabama Attorney General Troy King filed suit against in 2005
over drug prices. The case against AstraZeneca was the first to go
to trial.
The trial of the state's lawsuit against Novartis AG's
pharmaceutical division and SmithKline Beecham Corp. is scheduled
to begin next week before Price.
AstraZeneca attorney Kim Harris argued Monday the verdict was
more than is allowed by law and should be reduced to no more than
$86 million.
